Marathon Running Socks

Over 42.2 kilometres, small things become big things. A sock that feels fine for a 5K can be the reason a marathon unravels. Here is what to look for, and how to prepare.

What changes over distance

Feet swell, sweat builds and every stride adds a little friction. Over three, four or five hours, it all adds up. A marathon sock has to stay dry, stay put and protect the areas under the most pressure, from the first kilometre to the last.

Cushioning that lasts

Targeted cushioning under the forefoot and heel absorbs the repeated impact of the race without the bulk that changes how your shoe fits. Look for protection where you land and push off, and a lighter knit everywhere else. The basics are in how to choose running socks.

Temperature and moisture

A thermoregulating, moisture-wicking knit keeps feet cool and dry as the race goes on, which is what keeps blisters away in the closing kilometres. Read more in our guide to anti-blister running socks.

A fit that holds

A sock that slips at 30 kilometres is hard to ignore. An arch band and ribbed cuff hold the sock in place, and a crew length protects the ankle from the shoe's heel collar.

Nothing new on race day

The oldest rule in marathon running applies to socks too. Wear the pair you will race in on your long training runs, so you know exactly how they feel late in a race.

Rotate through your training block

Over a marathon block of sixteen weeks or more, rotating several pairs keeps each one at its best. A 3-Pack gives you a fresh pair for every key session, priced below three single pairs.
